Tämän kirjoituksen tarkoituksena on ottaa kantaa jokseenkin mahtipontiseen titteliin, joka blogin nimestä löytyy, ja jonka mahtipontisuus vaatii mielestäni selityksen. Samalla avaan viiden vuoden taivaltani Cityn toimituksen ratissa. Valitsin tittelin blogin nimeksi parista syystä.
Ensinnäkin haluan jatkossa entistä suoraselkäisemmin seisoa oman työnimikkeeni takana. Päätoimittajan roolissa vuosien varrella tapahtuneiden muutosten takia uskallan tehdä sen entistä avoimemmin ja julkisemmin. Toisekseen se viittaa toivottavasti jo menneeseen ajanjaksoon, johon otsikon kysymyskin osoittaa. Aikaan, jolloin pääsin päätoimittamaan lähinnä omia tekemisiäni.
Päätoimittaja on kaiken kaikkiaan mukavan ironinen titteli. Se huokuu perinteisten maakuntalehtien mielipiteitään väkisin kansalle junttaavien patruunoiden tai heidän tilalleen vaihdettujen bisnesvetoisten, potkunantoa alaisilleen pelkäämättömien muutosjohtajien arvovaltaisuutta. Se on kiva laittaa allekirjoitukseksi sähköpostiin ja otsikoksi blogiin. Toivottavasti maistatte kuitenkin sarkastisen sivumaun.
Kun vanhanmallinen ja kaikkien kaupunkilaisten mielissä edelleen kummitteleva, ravintoloissa ja kaupoissa jaettava City-lehti ajettiin alas edellisen omistajan Janton-konsernin kauden päätteeksi 2011, nettioperaatio jäi “kiinnostavaan” ja “haastavaan” tilanteeseen. Se tarkoitti noin 25 ihmisen operaation kutistumista kuuteen tai seitsemään tyyppiin. Itse valehtelin sujuvasti henkeni pitimiksi, kun minulta silloisena verkon päätoimittajana kysyttiin, uskonko verkko-operaation pysyvän jaloillaan ilman lehden tukea. Mielessäni oli pari työllistettyä lisäkuukautta, ennen kuin joutuisin samaan kuin suurin osa jengistä – etsimään itselleni uutta duunia.
Tässä sitä ollaan, viisi vuotta myöhemmin. Matka ei ole ollut missään nimessä helppo, mutta se on ollut opettavainen. Ensimmäiset pari vuotta uuden Cityn aikaa vedin toimituksellista kivirekeä pitkälti yksin. Elin ajoittain jakomieliseksi ajautuvassa tilanteessa, jossa kävin toimituskokouksia omassa päässäni ja pomo-minäni jakoi käskyjä suorittavan portaan minälleni.
Pari vuotta sitten sain aisaparikseni ihanan ja osaavan toimittajan, ja toiminnassa on tietysti ollut koko ajan mukana satunnainen joukko avustajia ja harjoittelijoita. Tärkeässä roolissa on ollut myös toimituksen ympärille kasvanut vakinaisten työntekijöiden joukko, jotka myyjistä ja ad-operatoreista lähtien osallistuvat tarvittaessa toimituksellisten haasteiden taklaamiseen.
Cityn digitaalisen aikakauden kasvu on todellinen ja dokumentoitu. Toimitusjohtajamme Ilkka Lavas hehkuttaa tuoreessa blogauksessaan, kuinka City on kasvanut viimeisten neljän vuoden aikana huimat 2367 prosenttia ja ansainnut sillä paikan kansainvälisen kasvukilpailun parhaimmistossa. Toimituksen puolellakin on voinut tuntea homman menevän eteenpäin, mutta ei ehkä aivan tuhansia prosentteja.
Neljän vuoden kasvuprosentit kuvaavat hyvin nollausta, joka Citylle tehtiin edellisen operaation alasajossa ja rohkeata kasvua, jota City Digital -nimellä ja sittemmin CityTableOnline Oy:n nimellä on toteutettu. Tuo kasvu on tarkoittanut syntyä mediaperheelle, jonka osana ja ytimessä on edelleen City-lehti, mutta jonka ympärille on kasvanut rihmastoinen yhteistyö- ja omistusverkosto. Siihen kuuluvat muun muassa ravintolapuolta vahvistavat TableOnline-pöytävarauspalvelu ja Eat.fi-ravintolatietopalvelu sekä satojen isojen ja pienempienkin medioiden bannerikauppaa hoitava Improve Media -mainosverkko.
Toimituksen kasvuun ei olla osattu tai uskallettu satsata, koska sen saaminen suoraan tuottavaksi on vaikeata.
Mainosverkkobisnes antaa hyvän esimerkin jokseenkin synkistä näkymistä journalismin tulevaisuuden rahoituksen yllä. Niihin viittasin jo tämän blogin ensimmäisessä kirjoituksessa. Mainosverkko on hyvä bisnes sinänsä, mutta miten käy sisältöön satsaavan kaupallisen median ansaintalogiikalle? Kun yksittäinen mainosverkko kaupallistaa huutokauppojensa kautta miljoonien lukijoiden mainokset, ei yksittäiselle medialle valu kuin roposia. Media voi vaikuttaa saamaansa rahamäärään haalimalla kasaan mahdollisimman paljon lukijoita. Niitä saa muun muassa kohuotsikoinnilla, tissikuvilla ja jos ei suoranaisesti valehtelemalla, niin ainakin vetämällä mutkat riittävän suoriksi vaikeista asioista. Toisaalta se sopii erinomaisesti toimituksille, joiden hihnat on vedetty jo valmiiksi niin kireälle, että mutkat on oikaistava joka tapauksessa.
Citynkin toimitus yrittää tehdä itsensä jatkuvasti tuottavaksi perustellakseen olemassaolonsa. Siihen kuuluu paljon muutakin kuin lukijoiden haalimista. Se tarkoittaa ruokakampanjoiden, kuten vuoden aloittavan Lux Eatin ja tammikuun lopussa järjestettävien SYÖ!-viikkojen viestintää. Se tarkoittaa yhteistyöjuttuja brändien tai ravintoloiden kanssa, kuten Adidaksen kanssa tehdyssä Original Icons -sarjassa ja Cumuluksen Bistro-ravintolan esittelyssä. Se tarkoittaa yhteistyöblogien suunnittelua, myymistä ja ylläpitoa, kuten Sports Bar Casino Helsingin kanssa tehdyssä Tuomari-blogissa tai Kirkon parisuhdeterapeuttien kanssa toteutetussa, lukijoiden parisuhdepulmiin vastauksia antavassa Suhdeklinikka-blogissa. Se tarkoittaa palavereita erilaisten sovellusvalmistajien, medioiden ja ties millä asioilla liikkuvien tahojen kanssa.
Tämä kaikki ei tule luonnostaan toimittajalle, voin kertoa sen kokemuksesta. Se kuitenkin kannattaa, jos sen avulla saa luotua uusia edellytyksiä riippumattomalle journalismille. Viisastenkiveä ei siinä suhteessa ole toistaiseksi löytynyt. Pidempiaikaiset yhteistyöt ja säännölliset kampanjat ylläpitävät toimintaa ja antavat vapauden keskittyä toimituksessa oleelliseen.
(Tulen kirjoittamaan tähän blogiin Cityn tekemästä sisältömarkkinoinnista ja natiivimainonnasta. Aihe on kuuma peruna toimittajien keskuudessa, eikä osa näe mitään järkeä myydä journalismin uskottavuutta kaupallisuuden alttarilla. Itse puolestaan katson, että kohta ei ole mitään myytävää, jos toimittajat eivät ala ymmärtää ja kantaa vastuuta niistä taloudellisista edellytyksistä, joiden puitteissa toimituksellista työtä tehdään. Sisältömarkkinointi on yksi työkalu, jolla toimittajat pääsevät kantamaan tuota vastuuta. Missään ei sanota, että kenenkään pitäisi myydä jotain sellaista, minkä takana ei pysty seisomaan tai jonka ei usko aidosti kiinnostavan lukijoita.)
Koska monisuuntaisen operaatiomme johdon mielessä on kansainvälistyminen, laajentuminen ja erilaiset yritysostot, on toimituksen kannettava vastuuta hyvinkin konkreettisesti omasta elinvoimastaan ja mahdollisesta kasvustaan. Koska toimituksen kasvu on hidasta tai olematonta, on syytä pysähtyä katsomaan sitä, miten käytössä olevat resurssit voisi käyttää järkevämmin hyödyksi. Tämä siksi, että toimituksen elinvoima korreloi toimittajien mielenterveyden kanssa.
Yksi tärkeimpiä suunnanmuutoksia, joita toimituksessa on juonittu jo pidemmän aikaa, mutta joka on tarkoitus ottaa käyttöön asteittain myös tosimaailmaan, liittyy tahdin hidastamiseen ja aidosti merkityksellisen sisällön synnyttämiseen. Vähennetään kilpajuoksua muiden toimitusten kanssa, eikä roiskita juttuja ulos pelkästään sen takia, että on itse päätetty, että päivässä pitää julkaista neljä tai viisi uutta artikkelia. Rakennetaan isompia kokonaisuuksia, kohdataan oikeita ihmisiä ja synnytetään uusia näkökulmia sen sijaan, että kierrätettäisiin samaa, mitä kaikki muutkin kierrättävät vain siksi, että se on helppoa ja tuotantotehokasta.
Tänä vuonna esittelemme konseptin nimeltä “Cityn isot”, joka antaa meille mahdollisuuden tehdä laajoja ja oletettavasti kiinnostavia kokonaisuuksia eri aihealueista. Ensimmäisenä on vuorossa kokonaisuus otsakkeella Tee-se-itse-musiikki. Siihen on haastateltu kiinnostavia suomalaisen undergroundin tee-se-itse-artisteja, ja siinä pohditaan muuttunutta artistiutta kotistudioiden ja digitaalisten jakelukanavien aikakaudella. Seuraavana ensi vuodelle on luvassa Suuren ravintolaäänestyksen ympärille rakentuva kokonaisuus, ravintola-aiheinen “iso”, ja toimituksessa suunnitellaan myös esimerkiksi seksiin ja päihteisiin keskittyviä “isoja”. “Isojen” parissa toimittajat saavat käyttää runsaasti aikaa, ja ne julkaistaan kerralla siinä vaiheessa, kun ne ovat mielestämme valmiina. Ei siksi, että huomiselle ei ole mitään julkaistavaa.
Samaan aikaan pyrimme hyppäämään entistä paremmin kaupunkilaisten päivärytmiin ja ruokkimaan some-kanavissa heitä sellaisella sisällöllä, mitä mihinkin kanavaan on tarkoitettu, sen sijaan, että käyttäisimme niitä pelkästään omien artikkelien pakkosyötön kanavina.
Olen kyllästynyt pitämään yllä paikkaansapitämättömiä suuruudenkuvitelmia Cityn toimituksesta. Niiden ylläpitäminen on yksi tärkeimmistä syistä, miksi Cityn toimituksessa on sorruttu ajoittain väärille urille. Tämä blogi on yksi työkaluista, joilla noita illuusioita voi rikkoa. Samat entisen suuruuden illuusiot vaivaavat koko media-alaa, joka ei useinkaan uskalla tunnustaa tilanteen kriittisyyttä. Yritetään tehdä jääräpäisesti liian pienellä porukalla liian paljon, eikä saada välttämättä tehtyä yhtään mitään, mutta yleisön suuntaan pitää esittää isoa ja mahtavaa.
Vastaanottavalla puolella on yleisö, joka Suomessa selvästi arvostaa laajamittaisesti laadukasta journalismia, kuten esimerkiksi Ylen Atte Jääskeläisen ja pääministeri Sipilän kaverikerhoa kohtaan osoitettu huoli todistaa tai josta Klikinsäästäjän tai Mitättömimmät uutiset -sivujen suosio kertoo. Valitettavasti yleisö ei ole valmis maksamaan journalismista muuta kuin pakollisen Yle-veron ja mahdollisen Hesarin tilauksen. Syntyy tilanne, jossa toimittajat tekevät kiireessä ala-arvoista jälkeä tyytymättömälle yleisölle, ja kaikilla on käsitys siitä, mitä on hyvä journalismi, mutta kenelläkään ei ole minkäänlaista ajatusta siitä, mikä olisi kestävä tapa rahoittaa sitä.
Ei kirvestä kannata kaivoon heittää, koska pilvellä on hopeareunukset ja niin edelleen. Se, että Cityn tuhansien prosenttien kasvu ei ole osunut toimitukseen, mutta toimitus pyristelee edelleen eteenpäin, on hyvä juttu, sillä se osoittaa, että elossapysyminen on mahdollista. Bannerimyynnin merkityksen väheneminen toimituksissa tarkoittaa parhaimmillaan sitä, että tekemisessä kannattaa oikeasti keskittyä muuhunkin kuin järjettömään lukijoiden haalimiseen. Erilaiset palvelut, kuten Cityn kohdalla tapahtuma-, pöydänvaraus- ja käyttäjien arvosteluihin perustuva ravintolatietopalvelu voidaan nähdä tapana toteuttaa samaa tiedonjakamista ja toimintaan ohjaamista, mitä lehti toteutti parikymmentä vuotta sitten. Yhteistyön kautta avautuu myös mahdollisuus tarjota Cityn ravintolasisältöjä palveluiden ravintoloista kiinnostuneille yleisöille.
Vaikka isot talot olisivat kusessa vanhojen ansaintamalliensa kanssa, se ei tarkoita etteikö mediakentällä olisi positiivistakin kuhinaa. Perusteelliseen tutkivaan journalismiin erikoistunut Long Play on kehittänyt mallin, jolla myydään onnistuneesti yksittäisiä artikkeleita. Laatu on korkealla, ja yksittäiset toimittajat saavat parhaillaan hyvän korvauksen näkemästään vaivasta. Toisena esimerkkinä hyvästä meiningistä toimii The Ulkopolitist, joka julkaisi vuoden 2016 aikana 138 ulkopolitiikkaa kiinnostavista näkökulmista avaavaa artikkelia. Samalla se kasvatti tekijäporukkansa 66 tyyppiin, joille 11 000 euron joukkorahoituskampanja ei tarjoa toimeentuloa, mutta se ei ilmeisesti haittaa, koska tekijätiimi on sitoutunut rakkaudesta lajiin. Lisäksi podcast-innostus on rantautunut Suomeen, ja uutta kiinnostavaa kuunneltavaa putkahtelee esiin viikottain. Vaikka ansaintamallit ovat hukassa, on hyvää sisältöä tarjolla paljon.
Eikä käy tylsäksi päätoimittajan elämä. Viikosta toiseen pitää määritellä omaa tonttia uusiksi, ja koko ajan pitää olla valmiina muuttumaan. Siitä se itsensä päätoimittaminen koostuu. Ja onneksi myös entistä enemmän ympärillä olevista ihmisistä, joilta oppii aina jotain uutta.
