Iphonen kehittäjä ja iPodin luojaksi tituleerattu Tony Fadel tuli Suomeen noin 30 vuotta sitten. Tony vietiin Nokian toimistolle, jossa hän sai nähdä mielenkiintoisen historiallisen salaisen demon. Demossa Tonylle näytettiin SMS viestin lähetys. Hän ei vielä silloin tiennyt, että siitä tulee iso juttu. Tony on ollut mukana monta kertaa luomassa uutta ja hän muistutti, että joka kerta kun luodaan uutta ei voi tietää minkälainen seikkailu siitä tulee.
Tony oli töissä General Magicilla, jossa he kehittivät jo vuonna 1993 iPhonen – 15 vuotta liian aikaisin. 90-luvulla Tony oli rakentamassa ladattavia pelejä liian aikaisin. He tekivät myös mobiilisähköpostin liian aikaisin. Vuonna 1993-1994 maailmassa ei ollut nettiä, ei ollut kännyköitä. He olivat ratkaisemassa ongelmia liian aikaisin.
Itselläni on samanlaisia kokemuksia: perustimme ensimmäisen ilmaisen suomalaisen sähköpostin vuonna 1996. Loimme mobiilisähköpostin vuonna 1999 jolloin kännykät olivat hitaita ja netti alkeellinen. Nettisanakirjoistamme (Ilmainen Sanakirja) tuli sentään suosittuja, mutta monista muista startupeista ei ole kuin muisto jäljellä.
Tony Fadell muistutti, että uuden kehittämisessä on hyvä kerrata oletko rakentamassa jotain mitä ihmiset tarvitsevat nyt vai tulevaisuudessa. Jos rakennat särkylääkettä ennen kuin ihmisellä on pää kipeä, niin tuote ei välttämättä lennä, mutta jos olet riittävän sinnikäs ja uskot, että ihminen tarvitsee jonain päivänä särkylääkettä niin olet sitten valmis kun pää on kipeä ja tuotettasi tarvitaan. Menestykseen täytyy joskus odottaa sitä hetkeä, kun ihmiset tarvitsevat tuotettasi eli ratkaisua asiakkaan ongelmaan.
Menestyvän tuotteen täytyy puhutella asiakasta kokonaisuudessaan. Hyvä menestyvä tuote – kuten Tony Fadellin Applella kehittelemä iPod – herättää tunteita ja järkeä. Hyvä tuote tarjoaa käyttäjälle monipuolisesti kokemuksia.
Tuotteen täytyy olla myös jollain tavalla kiinnostava tai sen täytyy luoda jotain hyötyä. Tony Fadell oli mukana Nestin perustamisessa. Nest myöhemmin myytiin Googlelle. Kun he perustivat sitä, heillä oli vaikeuksia määritellä mitä arvoa tuote luo. Tiimi pohti: Ketä kiinnostaa oikeasti joku termostaatti? Pohdittuaan he havaitsivat, että maailman jokaisessa talossa on termostaatteja. Hyötyä Nest tuo kun se säästää energiaa ja rahaa. Nest on pieni laite, mutta sillä on iso vaikutus jos jokaisessa talossa maapallolla säästetään edes pieni määrä energiaa.
Uuden luominen vaatii sinnikkyyttä. Joskus idea saattaa olla oikea, mutta aika väärä. Tony on itse ollut liian usein etuajassa liikkeellä ja siksi tarvitaan pitkäjänteisyyttä. Joka kerta kun luodaan uutta – ei voi tietää minkälainen seikkailu siitä tulee.
